week 3: over and done with | animation mentor

Well... there is my first "animation" for AM. The old "bouncing ball" routine... I went with a soccer ball bounce. It was fun, and the next few weeks are going to consist of lots of bouncing balls... just different flavors each week. So get a neck brace if you are prone to whiplash. Because there are about to be lots of ups and downs.....

Secondly I had to do a pose that expressed "EXCITEMENT" -- I wanted to do something different... but a ton of people did jumps. But mine differed in that I didn't do the Toyota Leap. (One hand up in a fist.) But everyone did good with their poses.. I think we should composite all our jump poses together. The pose turned out ok, I like it.. but I wish I knew how to render better with maya (regarding lighting). I just never learned the lighting techniques, but would love to have put in a ground plane, lit the scene well and rendered it to give the jumping feeling more emphasis. Eh. Maybe later. That's it for now folks. Talk at you again soon.

week 2 poses | animation mentor

Well, here are my poses for week 2. They were fun. The Stu rig is great. It's really fun to mess around with. I actually did several poses, but are 2 that were based off of a couple of the sketches I had previously posted. Hopefully Brett will like them... and if not, I hope he rips them up with good critiquing.

class 1 : week 2 | animation mentor

Last week was great for the Q&A, but otherwise kind of slow. Got to know some of the other students. This week is kind of the same. Sketching and doing some posing on Stu. I went to the golf course and did some sketches... they are ok. I honestly think that even though I did fairly quick sketches that I still spent too much time on them. I think I may go back out and sketch some more somewhere else and just focus more on capturing the pose and energy, but not the details... I think that might help.

Anyway, here is a glimpse at some of my poses... Nothing that special. I will post Stu up after I pose him some more.

first q and a | animation mentor

Well.. I am pumped. Just had my first Q & A with Brett and it was amazing. (Up until my internet connection died -- I got it back up just in time to see that the Q&A session had closed down. Oh well.)

First let me say Brett is great. He was so laid back, so down to earth, and so humble. He really made us, well at least I know me, feel at ease. It was a great time to get to meet all the other classmates, hear their stories and inspirations and get to know their goals. I really hope we are able to use this time to push each other.

Brett took the time to fill us in on his past, how he got to where he is and his experiences, recommendations of things to study/learn, etc. It really was a million times better than I could have anticipated or dreamt of, AND I think this is just a scratch on the surface of how deep we are going to be able to go. These Q&A's are priceless. Nowhere else other than AM would I have this kind of an opportunity.

Here are some quick sketches of Stu

Now to start prepping and working on to week 2.

immersion | animation mentor

Well, the site is up and going today.. I guess this whole AM operation isn't just a front for caviar smuggling. Hmm. Whadda ya know?

Time to immerse myself the the Animation Mentor world. Looks like my mentor is Brett Schulz for Class 1. Don't know much about him yet... except that he works for Pixar. But I am sure he is going to wish he didn't know any of us "students" by the time we are done with him. I can't wait to meet him, and let him start dishing out the advice.

Actually, this really is making everything more real. Seeing who my classmates are, "cruising the campus", just feeling the whole thing out. I cannot wait to see where it goes. Um, but maybe I should stop posting here until I have something new to say though. It seems like all I am doing right now is saying "I cannot wait to see where this goes".

But want to know a secret?
I can't wait to see where this goes!

anticipation | animation mentor

Anticipation Of Death, Is Worse Than Death Itself.

Or so it is said. One week. But I feel like I am not prepared and am not sure how to. I haven't gotten my student registration package yet.. No Student ID yet. No software yet. I have no idea what I am doing at all in all probability. But worrying about it will do me no good. Those I know in AM have said it may all happen at once to get going.. but it will happen.

All I can do now is continue to study up on the fundamentals and be ready to start unlearning what I am learning now, so that I can learn it the correct way.... Did that make any sense whatsoever?
